Sensory Garden design by Addingtons of Northamptonshire
a local charity, were pleased to appoint Addingtons to design and install a new sensory garden for residents at their Darsdale Home in Raunds, Northamptonshire. Addingtons landscape gardeners are specialists in designing and constructing a sensory garden solution to suit your needs. Our bespoke gardens are a great addition to any school, hospital, centre or even in your home.
The gardens we constructed at darsdale for the NAB will enrich the life's of the residents, providing them with a collective sensory experience.
Special non-slip pathways will ensure that visually impaired people will
always have sure footing, even if the surface is damp or wet. They will
also be colour coded, lighter areas highlight walkways, whilst darker surfaces
indicate where they can sit or stand to touch plants that are aromatic.
A number of garden benches, together with the gazebo, are sited close to
the entrance for those residents that are not particularly mobile. Whilst
at the far right hand end a large summerhouse is situated that will seat
about 6 residents and guests. The summerhouse will provide welcome
shelter should there be a cool breeze, whilst being in close proximity to
the water feature to enjoy the sound of the fountains.
The carved and drilled monoliths will have water rising from their centres
which will cascade down the columns. These will not only provide an attractive
sound they will also be pleasant to touch; the water will drain
into grilled sumps that will be re-circulated. The whole system will be
sealed to avoid accidents.
Along the entire length of the garden there will be 5 pergolas, that will
have a variety of climbers trained to grow up them. 3 wind chimes will be
hung from the pergolas, one at the entrance, another in the middle of the
garden and the last at the summerhouse end. Each wind chime will have
a different note enabling visually impaired people to hear whereabouts
they are in the garden.
Concentrated in the middle of the area will be raised beds suitable for
residents that are confined to wheelchairs. These will contain a mixture of
fragrant plants as well as a small area that will be given over to residents
to grow and tend flowers or herbs of their own choice. An extensive list of
80 different species of climbers, grasses, shrubs and flowers have been
carefully chosen. None of them have thorns, spikes, sharp edges or are
poisonous. Over 500 plants will provide a variety of light and shade and
rustling grasses; delicate and strong fragrances will permeate the garden.
Different surface textures on bark, smooth timber and the water
features carved monoliths will complement the plants to give the blind
residents an explosion of sensory experiences.
Lighting will be strategically placed throughout the garden to illuminate
various feature plants and climbers. This will be used at dusk to help die
hard garden lovers make their way back safely to the comfort of the
home. The summerhouse will have two external lamps activated by PIR
sensors, as well as internal lighting and an emergency call button for
residents.
The proposed lighting will also serve as an intruder deterrent; at the moment
there is very little security in that area of the site; a narrow quiet
road and fields lie beyond the boundary of the property.
